handwritten text installation probes states of in-betweenness—especially as it occurs across tongues, providing nuanced insight into immigrant identity while also offering a rich metaphor for queer experience. The work centers moments of fluidity and dissonance, presenting word plays and Spanish-English pairings that reveal the gendered power structures built into language and the slipperiness of meaning. Language is a subjective, ever-changing entity. Many people consider it an institution, but words are continually invented. They mutate and shift in meaning throughout time; they even fall in and out of fashion. I began to understand this more when I migrated to the U.S. and began thinking in two languages. Our relationship to our primary language can often be so embodied, it is hard to separate from it. The flow between the two created a distance that allowed for a more critical and flexible gaze toward words and their meanings. In the moments when I felt my Spanish slipping away but I still struggled with English, I felt orphaned between two languages. From this dynamic surged “errors” or cross-language mistranslations that eventually yielded a directory of invented terms, a collection of tiny unintended poems. In this way, a kind of deconstructed artist book began to unfold, a fragmented language approaching a liminal tongue of my own that aligns with the fluidity of queer identities. Free from these institutional scaffoldings, I noted how power and violence are woven into the connective tissue of language, and how simple interventions could soften that violence and disarm that power—essentially queering it. mouth to mouth demands the viewer assimilate to it—it refuses to code-switch and pays homage to the knotty and fertile tongues of survival, like Spanglish and Polari, an eclectic 19th-century slang used by queer people to disguise themselves from hostile outsiders. Compuesta de 83 paneles, boca a boca es una instalación de textos manuscritos que indaga estados intersticios —en particular si son, además, interlingüísticos— y que no solo permite comprender mejor las sutilezas que hacen a la identidad de los inmigrantes, sino que ofrece un campo metafórico fértil para transmitir la experiencia queer. La obra pone el foco en momentos de fluidez y disonancia al presentarnos juegos de palabras y emparejamientos de términos en español e inglés que revelan estructuras de poder relativas al género enquistadas en el lenguaje, así como el carácter escurridizo del significado. La lengua es una entidad subjetiva y en constante cambio. Muchas personas la consideran una institución, pero constantemente van surgiendo palabras nuevas. Las palabras mutan y cambian de significado a lo largo del tiempo; hasta se ponen de moda y luego caen en el olvido. Empecé a comprender mejor todo esto cuando emigré a Estados Unidos y comencé a pensar en dos idiomas. Tenemos una relación tan estrecha con la lengua materna que resulta difícil separarse de ella. Pero esa fluctuación entre los dos idiomas generó una distancia que me permitió analizar las palabras y sus significados de una manera más crítica y flexible. En los momentos en los que sentía que estaba perdiendo el español, pero aún seguía teniendo dificultades con el inglés, me sentí huérfano entre los dos idiomas. Esa dinámica dio lugar a pequeños errores de traducción que, con el tiempo, generaron un directorio de palabras inventadas, una colección de pequeños poemas involuntarios. Y así, poco a poco, fue desplegándose una especie de libro deconstruido de artista, una lengua fragmentaria que se acerca a un lenguaje liminal propio que se adapta muy bien a la fluidez de las identidades queer. Liberado de los límites impuestos por las estructuras del lenguaje, me di cuenta de que el poder y la violencia forman parte de la trama del tejido conectivo de la lengua y de que con realizar unas simples intervenciones se podía reducir esa violencia y desarmar ese poder, es decir, se podía queerizar la lengua. boca a boca exige a quien la contempla un ejercicio de asimilación: la obra se rehúsa a cambiar de código y rinde homenaje a los enredados y fértiles idiomas de supervivencia, como el espanglish y el polari, una ecléctica jerga decimonónica utilizada por personas queer para camuflarse ante la hostilidad de ciertos desconocidos.
